Walking into Kariton Gallery today was like walking into a Carnival. Everywhere you turned was a new and interesting mask or costume. Ann Grundy the artist was busy calmly telling people about her creations, or she would be taking little excited jumps across the floor when it would quite down. The drummer, part of "The Mask Trio". A Painter, A Potter, A Collaboration

Gwen Gregorig award winning Painter and Pat Schendel a ceramic artist using crystalline porcelain techniques are the first show at the Kariton Gallery after being renovated. The renovation was mostly paint and moving into the studio space which had been rented out.

Pat's crystalline porcelains entitled "Catch the Wave" are amazing. It was very difficult to not touch. She was recently in Maui and experienced a tsunami so she has continued with her wave in the pieces, which give them one of her unique touchs.

Gwen works with water color, oil and acrylics using bright colors in her floral and nature pieces.

Gwen also had miniatures of delicate floral and landscape.

We enjoyed the show hope you can make it. It's on till May 12, 2010.

Art In The Park

Kariton House on Mill Lake

June 27Th was a perfect day for Art In the Park at Mill lake. There I was a perfect setting for my blog and I forgot my camera. The artists were all peaceful at their tables surrounded by their work, some describing in detail how if you take my course I can show you how to make an interesting sculpture out of an old tee shirt. Artists set up in strategic places painting the scenes that unfolded as the day progressed with people coming and going, doing what people do best in a park on a beautiful day.

I was there to see my friends and to do a survey to see how many people were interested in having a theater in Abbostford. Some people were surprised to know Abbotsford doesn't have a proper community theater. It is surprising! What we do have is Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, with no dressing rooms, no green room, no storage for props. We also have Abbey Arts Centre which is a part of the high school and has limited usage with school taking first priority, even if you booked it a year in advance.

A lot of people feel we don't have the money to build another project, and thought plan A plan B was going to included theater? I can't remember which plan was A and which was B, but a lot of people are wondering what happened, and who was not listening to the needs of the community? A community Theater should have been built 2o, 30 years ago. I won't mention names but we had a bit of name calling and the name bandied about was philistines, Abbotsford has had council after council of philistines, and people keep voting them in.

It was a beautiful day, with interesting people, good conversation, and plenty of art.

Wings a flight from Darkness

Anne de Verteuil and I had a lot to talk about on our way back from Faerie worlds Festival in August. The inspirations were limitless. From our rambling thoughts we decided to present a group art show , with multi mediums and the theme "Wings". As the show was being organized Anne became very ill with depression and anxiety. Anne's flight from depression, with the help of her friends lifting her up and away from the darkness is the inspiration behind her art.

As a medium Anne used her poetry and love of fiber. Writing out the words of her depression on fabric was cathartic making her joyful to know the darkness has passed. With the dark comes the light, and her work shows the recovery as well. Darkness to light , bad to good. Despair to hope and hope is what she gives to those who suffer as she did.

The symbolism of wings takes many turns, we think of Angels the good, gargoyles the bad, Fairies just because they have wings doesn't mean they are good, flight, dreaming, flying away from problems, insects, yes the inspiration is limitless.
